Why is it hot?
Starting out as a place to promote music in the medium of Welsh, the club now runs a number of DJ nights alongside live music of all descriptions. It's a three-storey building, with the largest floor at the top being the place to see big acts, and the ground floor better suited to acoustic nights. There are events on throughout the year, and in November Clwb Ifor Bach will be playing host to part of the Swn Festival.
The club nights seem to go through changes every now and again. Tuesdays are no longer public favourite Rock Inferno, having switched instead to Year of the Pug - expect a mish-mash of Metal, Emo, Indie, Punk and Pop. Wednesdays host Listen Up! Said to be Cardiff's longest running alternative night, you can hear Indie, Pop, Motown and Funk tunes. The club nights tend to start about 10pm, and you'll pay £2-£3 on the door.
Drinks are served up without frills - the choice is limited but the prices aren't too bad if you find out what deals they're running on the night.
What's the vibe?
The vibe changes with the music that the club is hosting - because there's such a varied mix of genres, the atmosphere can be very different from one night to the next. Whatever scene you're in to you're bound to find a night when you'll feel at home.
Worst part?
One of the irritating things about the Welsh Club is that if you've paid for entry to a gig on the top floor, you're not automatically entitled to head downstairs to a club night afterwards without paying again for entry. Which really doesn't seem fair when some of the gig tickets are so expensive.
