How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

So you finally got rid of that spot on your cheek, only to be left with a nasty mark in its place. Sod’s law, eh?!

About 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 are affected by acne and with that comes scarring – even if you don’t pick your skin!

When you have a cystic pimple, more white blood cells rush to heal the infected zone, but aren’t able to form collagen the normal way due to enzymes in the area of the acne lesion which eat away at collagen and elastin – hence, it’s inability to regenerate completely which causes a scar.

Not all hope is lost. There are ways to get rid of scars, both at home and in clinics.

Get rid of acne with these products:

Use an at-home product with glycolic or salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin and help bring dark skin cells to the surface, plus a bactericidal cream to kill germs.

We rate these:

Alpha H Micro Cleanse With Glycolic Acid and Rice Bran, £24.50 – it’s basially microdermabrasion in a bottle!

Korres Sensitive Sage and Salicylic Acid Regulating Gel, £13 – this deep, purifying cleanser removes traces of dirt and oil without leaving your skin feeling like a Lizards.

Mario Badescu Anti Acne Serum, £18.95 – layer this on before you go to bed and see it magically heal over night.

Quinoderm 10 Cream, £2.65 – this Benzoyl Peroxide cream kills bacteria, rather than slowing down it’s growth.

Get rid of acne with this at home device:

Lustre Pure Light Acne Treatment, £225 - Lustre Pure Light is a unique and hands-free acne treatment designed by a leading dermatology team. Using the latest 3rd generation blue-light technology, it delivers a safe, targeted and proven treatment killing the bacteria that cause Acne.

Get rid of acne with these treatments:

Cortisone shot

If you can get to your doc in time, ask for a cortisone shot (a steroid medication). ‘The shot will reduce inflammation drastically – lowering the chance of scarring or of you being tempted to pop the pimple and create a deeper mark’, says Jessica.

Skin Peels

Using highly effective ingredients, tailored to your specific requirements , peels can resurface the skin to improve texture and smoothness. ‘By removing dull, dead cells from the skin surface, open pores, blemishes and fine lines are all immediately reduced’, says Jessica.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Blue IPL targets and neutralises the bacteria (P.acnes) responsible for the redness and inflammation of acne. ‘It provides great, scientifically proven results for clearing acne – 81% reduction in lesions’, says Jesisca. It can be used on the face, chest and back and is suitable for all patients with acne.

‘The concept behind needling is the stimulation of new collagen production in your skin’, says Jessica, ‘the needle breaks the skin and causes micro-trauma to which your body responds by sending blood to the area for healing.’ As your skin repairs itself, new collagen builds up just below the surface causing the scars to plump.
